Of course you don't know Jack. This book about his life and times is barely half finished.
Jack is an orphan, surviving on his wits and the infrequent generosity of others among the seedy environment of Kingston, Jamaica, during the year, 1821. Searching for a job, any kind of job, Jack luckily found work as a lowly mess cook aboard the barky, 'Martha Jones'. They desperately needed a mess cook and hired Jack on the spot.
Mr. Barber, head of the galley, long on fairness but short on temper ruled his galley with a firm hand. Jack quickly learned that Barber's firm hand was the same one cuffing him for careless mistakes and insubordination. "Who do you think is running this galley younker?"
The 'Martha Jones' laded rum and raw sugar from Jamaica to Savannah. The captain would not be pleased if the ship wasn't made ready for sea by the morning tide.
